40443: Budgies

40443 Budgies is a set from the BrickHeadz Pets wave, which LEGO released in 2021. The box contains two figures: an adult budgie marked with number 124 and a chick with number 125, both sitting on a wooden perch. It joined my collection on 15 December 2021, and I bought it in the official LEGO Store together with other new releases from that year. I’ve written before that I consider the whole Pets series a failed experiment, and the birds in particular weren’t to my taste.

In total, 261 pieces are split here into two figures of different sizes. The larger budgie looks exactly as it should: the yellow and green colour scheme sticks to BrickHeadz standards, and the wooden perch gives the whole thing a sensible backdrop. The smaller chick is heavily simplified, but once you put the two side by side the contrast starts to fit the picture of parent plus child. I put the set on the shelf with the rest of the BrickHeadz Pets, next to the fish, the cats and the shepherd, which I have been consistently collecting since 2021. I recommend this set mainly if you already have other Pets, because the budgie on its own doesn’t save the whole series, but as part of a collection it starts to make sense.
