This isn’t news that will shake you, more of a curiosity, but I decided to preserve this short story on my site. In November 2020 LEGO announced a vote on the theme of the set that would get the special round BrickHeadz number 150.
Voters could choose between Lilo & Stitch, Minecraft, Jaws and Star Wars. Anyone wanting to vote had only a few days, from 26 November to 3 December at 10:00 CEST.
The results were announced on 16 December. According to LEGO there were 13 thousand votes, and Star Wars won. This turn of events pleased some, but disappointed many. The truth is that Star Wars is everywhere, it comes at us from all sides, fans of that universe have their own kingdom in LEGO, and in BrickHeadz itself there’s no shortage of Star Wars figures. So choosing any other world would have been more attractive. You could assume that eventually sets referring to all four candidates will appear in the BrickHeadz theme anyway; for instance, in April 2023 we’re getting more Minecraft sets. Even so, with Star Wars the matter is the most obvious: we’d have got that set in our hands anyway, that franchise will never end, and we’ll regularly see the results of that partnership in BrickHeadz. Votes like this should be used by fans to show LEGO that we want variety. Maybe we’ll get Lilo & Stitch later this year (that’s only my guess, not backed by any information) for the 100th anniversary of the Disney studio (Update 2024-02-01: And we did get Stitch). Jaws aroused the most curiosity, meaning a potential figure from the legendary 1975 film. You’ll admit that would be much more interesting than yet another Star Wars figure. Let’s hope LEGO is keeping a dusty model of Sheriff Brody somewhere and will soon put it in our hands.
In the end, as was revealed a year later in December 2021 (although leaks appeared much earlier, at least in August), Ahsoka Tano was chosen as the figure for this special set. After the vote, the vast majority of people commenting online were hoping for a Jar Jar Binks figure. As we know, a year later we still haven’t got a set with the best-known Gungan. (Update 2024-04-20: we’ve got it 🙂 ).
At the same time LEGO also announced that it was inviting people to send in photos of their favourite BrickHeadz sets and even new figures, but it wasn’t a competition and there was nothing to win, so interest was minimal. It ended up with 36 submissions.
